SPECIAL PROTECTED AREA

Rovinj islands and the coastal area www.natura-histrica.hr
The borderline of the area stretches from the Cape of Sv. Ivan in the north to the Barbariga Cape in the south, excluding the town of Rovinj (from the barrier at the railway track to the edge of the Monte Mulini forest). It includes all inhabited and uninhabited islands and the immediate coastal area of around 500 meters from the coastline, depending on the ground configuration.
The high landscape/aesthetic value of the area is reflected in the abundant vegetation of Turkish pine and Aleppo pine, cedars, cypresses and autochthonous black pine macchia, and the indented coast with numerous islands, reefs, bays and capes.

The islet of Dvije sestrice
These two islets represent the largest seagull nesting site in the Rovinj region. When seagulls were fewer in number, the islets were overgrown with macchia and elements of underbrush and were a seagull nesting reserve.

Saline
Saline is located right next to the Valalta area – this is a sort of a lagoon, muddy grounds with particularly interesting flora, where numerous and diverse birds stop by.

ISLANDS

Rovinj Archipelago www.natura-histrica.hr
The Rovinj Archipelago comprises 22 islands and islets. Sv. Andrija and Sv. Katarina, where Maistra's facilities are located, are the largest. Most of the islands were once owned by fishermen and wealthy Rovinj families that later sold them. The Red Island became property of Count Hütterott and the Island of Sv. Katarina belonged to Polish Count Milewski. A true competition followed to determine whose island is more beautiful, including systematic planting of trees and other flora, which turned both islands into the most desirable tourist destinations and pride of the town.

The Island of St. Andrija (Red Island)
In the early Middle Ages, there was a Benedictine hospice and monastery on the island. In 1446, the Dalmatian Franciscans came to the island, repaired and expanded the Church of St. Andrew and reconstructed the monastery. Between 1820 and 1890, the island was acquired by various companies that used the monastery premises as oil plants and cement processing factories. This was the time of the ruin of the island's cultural values. Eventually, in 1890, Johan Georg Hütterott purchased the Island of Sv. Andrija, provided it with values and converted it into a summer residence and headquarters of the future tourist complex. Georg Hütterott je converted the monastery building into a castle, laid soil and provided water, electricity and telephone connections. He planted selected Mediterranean and other plants and created a park, planted gardens and restored the glitter that island had had before the devastation caused by the manufacturing plants. The Baron Hütterott’s mausoleum on the neighboring Island of Maškin, connected with the Island of Sv. Andrija by a path, is also significant. The cleared area around the mausoleum is closed by a circular series of cypresses that probably represented a wind rose. Originally, twelve paths with cypresses led to the mausoleum. Only four were retained after the reconstruction of the horticultural part.

The Island of St. Katarina
The island’s prehistory dates back to the Bronze Age, which is confirmed by a prehistoric building discovered in 1886, so this area is the first inhabited place in the present Rovinj region. The island was later inhabited by various monastic orders. Until 1473, there was a hermit hospice here – after that, the Servites of the Order of Mary from the Treviso region came to the island and built a monastary, reconstructed the Chapel of St. Mary and erected a high bell tower. The monks stayed on the island until 1779 and the island became property of the Municipality by permission of the Venetian Magistrate, but marital relations soon caused the island to become property of the Paulini family. In 1860, the island was purchased by Matteo Rismondi and his only son Alvise Rismondo, a well-known Rovinj notary inherited the island from him. After 1890, when Baron Georg von Hütterott bought the Island of Sv. Andrija, wealthy circles suddenly became interested in purchasing land here, so they decided to build hotels and make Rovinj a glamorous summer resort for monarchical guests. The eccentric Polish Count Milewski bought the Island of Sv. Katarina in 1905.
This stone island was first well covered by soil and then afforested. Several piers, a network of paths across the island and a castle were built. The improvement was probably affected by the rivalry with the neighbor, Hütterott on Sv. Andrija. However, unlike Hütterott who had a rich social life on the island, Milewski prohibited access to Sv. Katarina with the help of dogs and bodyguards. Milewski invested a lot in the island so his role in the present attractiveness and beauty of the Island of Sv. Katarina is very big. Upon his death and due to the turbulent historical developments, the island changed owners several more times and then became property of the town of Rovinj after the end of World War 2.

TOWN BATHING SITES

Baluota Beach
In the evening, the rock and attractive town beach at the foot of the Church of St. Euphemia is transformed into a special place for unique events.

Lone Bay
After the renovation, it developed into the most visited town bathing site at attractive location of the Zlatni rt Park Forest, right next to the town and numerous Maistra’s hotel facilities (Hotel Park, Hotel Eden, Hotel Monte Mulini).

CAVES

Romualdo’s Cave www.natura-histrica.hr
Lim Fjord
This 105-meter long cave consists of several impressive halls that have preserved evidence of permanent existence of life since prehistoric times. The entrance to the cave is 47 centimeters high, and the main hall is five to six meters high. Romualdo’s Cave is a speleological phenomenon because the cave ornaments are located on the left side only, while the right side is empty.
In 1961 and 1962, archeologist Mirko Malez excavated 5 probes in the cave and found bones of Pleistocene animals, including: cave bear, cave lion, leopard, cave hyena, wild horse, big deer, snow hare, etc.
The most interesting items prove that man stayed at this site – the Paleolithic hunter (from the late Stone Age). The cave is also significant for the fact that Saint Romualdo used to live in it for three years, praying and meditating (1001 – 1004). The temperature in the cave is 14-17°C throughout the year. In summer months, colonies of bats, spiders and grasshoppers stay here.

GEOLOGICAL NATURAL MONUMENT

Monfiorenzo Quarry www.natura-histrica.hr
Not far from Rovinj
The geological monument of global value, demonstrating the genetic development of the Istrian coast is sometimes referred to as the Fantazija Quarry. Numerous layers prove the existence of petrified meadows formed by blue and green algae which were deposited on the shore over 130 million years by the power of the sea currents, mixed with limestone silt. This site is a unique example of limestone sedimentations and one of the most important and most interesting quarries in the world. The quality of stone from the area surrounding Rovinj is excellent, which is proven by the excavations demonstrating that the stone was used to make sarcophagi in the Roman era. Many luxurious buildings in Venice were built by the white stone excavated from Rovinj quarries, including the Duke's Palace, the buildings on St. Mark's Square, the "Santa Maria della Salute" church, and famous buildings in Padua and Ancona.

BAYS/CANYONS

Lim Fjord www.natura-histrica.hr
The fjord situated between Vrsar and Rovinj represents a sunken canyon valley in karst. It is 10 km long, the average width is 600 m and the deepest point (33 m) is at the entrance. Due to the many sea springs, the sea is less salty and less transparent than the open sea, which indicates a large amount of planktons. The temperatures fluctuate and the water is rich in oxygen. Its special characteristics provide abundant flora and fauna. The area is a natural hatching site for many fish species.

PALEONTOLOGICAL SITES

St. Romualdo’s Cave www.natura-histrica.hr
In 1961 and 1962, archeologist Mirko Malez excavated 5 probes in the cave and found bones of Pleistocene animals, including: cave bear, cave lion, leopard, cave hyena, wild horse, big deer, snow hare, etc.

PARK FORESTS

Zlatni rt Park Forest www.natura-histrica.hr
This is the oldest protected site in Istrian County, having a high aesthetic and botanical value. The erection of the park forest began in the second half of the 19th century, during the time of Baron Hütterott. They planted a six-armed star of Himalayan cedars, a path of cypresses and pines and formed meadows surrounded by Douglas firs and solitary exotic cypresses. The autochthonous black oak macchia with Mediterranean elements is also present. This is an inevitable destination for enjoying a walk or biking in nature.

History

PROTECTED URBAN SITES

Old Town core of Rovinj
The Old Town core of Rovinj, a protected urban whole, is its most amazing and unique part. The old part of the town is abundant in numerous Romanesque-Gothic, renaissance, baroque and neo-classicist windows, balconies, exterior stairways, roof terraces, portals and stairways. The narrow streets and squares contain amazingly crammed rows of houses supporting one another and ascending all the way to the Church of St. Euphemia. The Old Town core of Rovinj used to be protected by secure early medieval and renaissance walls that have been preserved to date on the south and north sides of the town. They are the St. Benedict’s Gate (presently the Coast Gate), the Gate under the Wall bearing an inscription from 1590, and the Gate of St. Cross with the town crest. The Old Fish Market Gate, presently the Balbi Arch, has undergone certain modifications.

Town Square (Gradski trg)
We enter the Old Town from the Town Square, in the place of the former town gate – the Old Fish Market Gate (presently the Balbi Arch. Venetian-style buildings on one side and buildings taking us back in history, in the artistic & architectural circles of the Trieste-Austrian style on the other side. There is also a relatively new fountain, built in 1959, where numerous town pigeons bathe and drink.

Right next to the square is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, the most important and best preserved Romanesque building in Rovinj.

Valdibora Square (Trg Valdibora)
If you go north from Town Square toward Valdibora Square, you will se the green town marketplace and the fish market and pass the building erected in 1854 and called Rubineum. Today, a part of it used by the Public Open College of Rovinj for theater purposes.

Shipyard Square (Trg Brodogradilišta)
There used to be 12 small shipyard on the stretch between the port and the marina because the residents of Rovinj have always ben well-known builders of batanas, braceras and leuts. The square was named after them and it holds the Visual Art Center Batana.

CULTURAL MONUMENTS

Town gates
Three of the seven town gates have preserved their original forms: the St. Benedict’s Gate (presently the Coast Gate), the Gate under the Wall bearing an inscription from 1590, and the Gate of St. Cross with the town crest. The Old Fish Market Gate, presently the Balbi Arch, has undergone certain modifications.

Balbi Arch
Formerly the Old Fish Market Gate, this is a sort of an entrance to the main street of the old town - Grisia. The Balbi Arch was named after Balbi, a former mayor of Rovinj. On the top of the arch is St. Mark’s lion from the 15th century, a symbol of the Venetian Republic with an open book, which means that Rovinj accepted the Venetian rule without war.

Town clock
It is situated on the main town square in Rovinj. It used to be a tower on the south corner of the former walls. The tower was expanded several times throughout its history, but it was originally built in the 12th century. Beneath the tower, there was a prison for minor crimes. The town clock from the mid-19th century with a Venetian lion, a symbol of Serenissima, was located on the town wall tower near the Califfi Palace.

Town Hall
Formerly a Praetorian palace, its foundations dating back to the year 1308. Over the centuries to come, it was expanded and reconstructed many times. A part of the ground floor even contained a prison, while the upper floor contained the big Town Hall Room, various offices and archives. The façade and the atrium were reconstructed between 1850 and 1860 when a series of Venetian and Rovinj family crests were mounted. It is presently the seat of the Town Hall.

Califfi Palace
The baroque palace of Count Califfi from the 17th-18th century is home to the Native Museum of the Town of Rovinj. It was established in 1954 on initiative of Rovinj’s artists who wanted it to become a place for collection of cultural wealth and a place of intensive exhibiting activities.

SIGNIFICANT TOWN STREETS

Grisia
Grisia Street is known for its traditional painting exhibition and leads to the top of the hill where the luxurious Parish Church of St. Euphemia, the guardian of Rovinj, is situated.

St. Cross (Sv. Križ)
If you go down St. Cross Street in immediate vicinity of the St. Cross Town Gate, you will come across a chapel of the same name, built in 1592. According to a legend, the sarcophagus containing the body of St. Euphemia stopped nearby, which is confirmed by the inscription on a column at the foot of the chapel erected on a rock by the sea.

Hilly (Bregovita)
The most beautiful street of the Old Town will take you to the Field on the Hill (Poljana na brijegu), dating back to the 18th century in its present form.

Švalba
Švalba Street, the first part of the town created outside the town walls in the 17th century, runs parallel with Hilly Street. Its baroque buildings make it one of the most beautiful streets of Rovinj.

Carrera
Taking a walk on Carrera Street, full of shops and connecting the historical core and new part of Rovinj, is inevitable. The name Carrera originates from the name «strada per/di carri», meaning the road for wagons. Until the 19th century, Carrera represented the main road to Rovinj and ran directly to the bridge on the channel (presently the area in front of the Native Museum, which separated the island settlement from the mainland. This was also the main road toward the south and east territory of Rovinj. Carrera began to develop the contours of a street in mid-17th century when Rovinj began to spread ashore due to the end of the war and plague epidemic.

CASTLES

Dvigrad
Located only 23 kilometers from Rovinj, the medieval town, presently a zero-category monument, was abandoned during the 17th century. Remains of numerous chapels and churches capture the visitors’ imagination with their cultural and historical beauty and value dating back to the times of Byzantium and Baroque.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES

Monkodonjo
The hill settlement of Monkodonjo is situated around 5 km east of Rovinj. The materials found in this settlement date back to the early and middle Bronze Age.
Monkodonjo is one of the 350 hill settlements discovered in Istria to date. The settlement is surrounded by a wall almost 1 kilometer in length and its height exceeds 3 meters in some places. It was built by stone blocks, some of which weigh several tons. The exterior and interior faces of the wall was made from monumental stone blocks, while the interior was covered by small rocks. There were two entrances to the settlement – on ein the west and one in the north. The settlement was divided into three parts. There was a necropolis surrounded by a wall on the top. This is where wealthier families lived, which is confirmed by remains of large residences made of stone and wood. Outside the walls of the necropolis are the Downtown and Uptown with craft areas and residences much simpler than those in the necropolis. The population is estimated at 1000.

Villa Rustica
The remains of the ancient Villa Rustica can be found in Cisterna Bay, around 1 km south of the Veštar Bay. Many fragments of ancient ceramics are spread across the area, especially along the shore (amforae, siphons, oil lamps…), while the remains of ancient walls disappearing into the ground in the coastal belt can be seen in several places along the shore. In the ancient times, there was an outhouse in the area surrounding the villa, that was used for processing of olives and grapes grown on the fertile plains of the hinterland. In 1991, an ancient grave dating back to the 2nd – 4th century was found right on the shore.

Mušego
A prehistoric necropolis from the Bronze Age. Several stone buildings were found on the hill, containing one or more bodies – they were used to bury the residents of Monkodonja.

St. Damijan Quarry
The remains of an ancient quarry can be found on the Cape of Sv. Damijan on the north side of Sv. Pavle Bay. It is situated right by the shore and stretches over 300 m2. Its lower level is almost at sea level, while the highest point is at around 7 meters, indicating that around 1000 m3 of stone blocks was extracted from the quarry.

CHURCHES

Church of St. Euphemia
It was created on a former pagan temple in the ancient Rome, dedicated to Istria and Fortuna. The original Christian building was dedicated to St. George and from the year 800, when St.Euphemia’s sarcophagus arrived in Rovinj, to both of them. It is now a beautiful baroque building dominating the Old Town. In 1650, they decided to demolish the old bell tower and replace it with a new one that would be identical to St. Mark’s bell tower in Venice. It is almost 60 m high and has a bronze statue of St. Euphemia on the top, cast in 1758, 4.70 m high, rotating and indicating the direction of the wind with her right hand.

Chapel od St. Thomas the Apostle
The Chapel of St. Thomas the Apostle is a wonderful monument of medieval architecture. It was mentioned in the 14th century and expanded in 1723 – the street area with a fresco displaying the crucifix was roofed.
Built in 1388, this is a very interesting building: the entrance is accessible by stairs, it was partially built in the same arch/gate and it has a small bell tower on the top. It belonged to the Fraternity of St. Francis.

Chapel of the Lady of Health
Erected in 1779, the Chapel of the Lady of Health is situated on the left side at the end of Švalba Street. The chapel contains valuable paintings on canvass and the altar painting is a copy of the painting from the famous Church of the Lady of Health in Venice.

Church of St. Benedict
Under the Arches Square contains the Church of St. Benedict from the 14th century, surrounded by tall houses, and the St. Benedict’s Gate (presently the Coast Gate) is nearby, with a stretch of the medieval walls from the 12th century.

Chapel of Holy Trinity
This is the most important and best preserved Romanesque building. It is located on Puddle Square near the bus terminal. The building is heptagonal and the interior of the exterior structure contains a circular area with seven niches and a dome, with all characteristics of the transition from the Romanesque art into Gothic art. The game of light coming from three exterior openings provides this small and harmonious building with a suggestive and monumental composition. A beautifully preserved early-Romanesque transom displaying the Golgotha with figures of Virgin Mary, Magdalena, St. Peter, St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist is a true jewel of local autochthonous art. The chapel offers no service – it has been converted into an excellently preserved gallery.

Church of the Lady of Mercy
It is situated on Carducci Street – the exact date of construction is unknown, but we do know it was consecrated in 1487. The inscription "Scip.Benz. P. 1584." - Scipione Benzon Podesta 1584 tells us it was renovated in 1584. As shown by the inscriptions above the doors and façade windows, the church was reconstructed and the ceiling was repaired in 1750, after the extension of the area behind the altar.

Church of St. Cross
The church was built in 1592 in sheer rock with a small bell tower on the façade and a loggia. It provides a magnificent view of the Island of Sv. Katarina. Below the church is a stone column erected in 1720, indicating the place where the sarcophagus containing the remains of St. Euphemia arrived according to a legend.

Church of St. Bartholomew
It is located by the edge of a plain beneath Valalta Bay. These are the remains of a Romanesque church missing the façade and the roof.

Church of St. Christopher
It is situated one kilometer east of Valalta at the edge of a fertile plain called Bazilika. This is parallelogrammic building with a semicircular protruding apside that is somewhat narrower than the central nave. The exterior side of the walls contains shallow column parts conencted with arches on the upper side. The walls were built quite rustically, which indicates they were made by an unskilled builder, and plastered inside and outside. The roof of the church consists of a wooden structure covered by channels, while the roof of the apside is covered by slate. According to the styling characteristics, it dates back to the Romanesque era.

Church of St. Thomas
Nalazi se 4 km sjeverno od It is located 4 kn from Rovinj, right next to the old Rovinj-Kanfanar railroad. The layout is the shape of a cross, with subsequently added bell tower on the north side. In the 16th century, radical construction works were performed in the church, completely changing its original form. The lateral arches were closed off so it became a single-nave building. The west part of the building was significantly shortened and a new façade with two rectangular windows was built. During the most recent research, they found several dozen fragments of pre-Romanesque architectural plastic and parts of church furniture – fragments of transoms, parapets, altar divider pilasters, columns with capitals… Based on the previoius knowledge about the church, it was probably built in the late 8th or early 9th century. The Church of St. Thomas is a nice example of sacral architecture during the Carolinian era in Istria.

Church of St. Damien
This small church is halfway between Palud Wetlands and St. Damien’s Cape. It was largely devastated so it now looks like a parallelogrammic building with no roof and facade. According to its styling characteristics, it was created between the 11th and 12th centuries, during the Romanesque era.

MONASTERIES

Franciscan Monastery
The construction of the wonderful baroque Franciscan Monastery began in 1702. This was the first time explosive was used in Rovinj to drill the large monastery water tank in sheer rock. The monastery library stores a collection of over 8,000 valuable books – some of them dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, are true rarities.

A beautiful complex located in the abundant greenery of the Muccia Peninsula. Formally opened on 22 May 1888 as the seamen’s hospice Maria Theresa, it was named after the Austrian archduchess who opened him in the presence of Archduke Carl Ludwig. From the early years of the 20th century to the beginning of World War 1, it was a hospital of the City of Vienna and was expanded between 1906 and 1908 on initiative of the mayor of Vienna Lueger. It was later converted into a hospital for orthopedic surgery.
