Culture: Fine Arts Course

Paint unforgettable motifs in the company of an academic painter!

The natural beauty surrounding a blend of tradition and cultural heritage has been a muse that has inspired many artists over the decades. The narrow streets of various Mediterranean cities have provided sanctuaries for many artists who have created their best works of art in the silence of their ateliers. It is no wonder that Rovinj has such a long painting history and well frequented Grisija - unique, outdoor exhibition of fine arts held in the street named Grisija, located within the old city.

Come and paint some memorable motifs with us: the old city core, numerous islets, lighthouses, fishermen, a batana (flatboat), the sun on the horizon, the trunks of century old olive trees... and countless other beautiful images.

Fine Arts Course

Program

Day 1
Just before dinner, by a welcome drink, you will be introduced to academic painter who will lead the fine arts course. He will make a presentation of the upcoming program.

Day 2
After an introductory lecture about basic artistic expression, held by your painting instructor, you will have an opportunity to view simple silhouettes from the city of Rovinj and then try to paint them. This will be followed by a tour of the city, visits to various small galleries, and a walk along narrow city streets that lead to the church of St. Euphemia. You will be able to explore the church, including its relics and the sarcophagi of saints who once protected the city. You will have an opportunity to create images and sketches, after which we invite you to take a short break on the Riva (waterfront) to enjoy a coffee and cake.

Day 3
We take off to the ancient city of Pula that offers many possibilities for one to paint unique, ancient motifs: the Roman Amphitheater or Arena, the Triumphal Arch of Sergius, August’s sanctuary, the remains of Roman villas, and the Roman Forum. Enjoy your visit to Pula. Upon return to Rovinj, we will stop in Bale, once a Roman fortress, to visit the picturesque town of Kaštel Bembo, famous for its Castrum Vallis art exhibition. It is possible to eat lunch in Bale, in an establishment housing a unique, autochthonous charm.

Day 4
Today we set out to the heartland of the Istrian peninsula to discover Istria’s native traditions. We will definitely visit Grožnjan, a place rightfully dubbed “the city of artists” because of its picturesqueness, as well as many colonies of musicians and artists. We will explore its narrow streets and art galleries, take in its magnificent views from the ancient walls, and then head over towards Motovun to enjoy the unsurpassed panoramas and atmosphere of the medieval city. We will give you a chance to set all of these images of beauty to memory and then offer you lunch is an ambience of an authentic village household.

Day 5
Today we will view Rovinj from its most beautiful angle - the one from the sea. From Rovinj we will take a relaxed boat ride along the rocky shoreline and head towards Lim bay and finally the small fishing town of Vrsar. We will walk through the city, along its cobblestone streets, and stop at several of the lookout points that provide views of Rovinj’s playful shore and an abundance of nearby islets. Vrsar has its own school for sculpting and pieces of art created there, including the works by the world-renowned sculptor Dušan Džamonja, decorate the city’s streets and parks.

Day 6
After breakfast, you will meet up with your instructor once again and then walk over to the Zlatni Rt park-forest where magnificent deciduous forests live together with other exotic tree species, century old olive trees, and fields of aromatic plants. The view of the open sea from Zlatni Rt will take your breath away. Take a mental image of the view, because you will return to your thoughts time and time again in order to recall the unsurpassed beauty you are witnessing. Buffet dinner followed by “piano night” where you have the chance to organize a presentation of your work.
