Nature: Bicycle Riding

Hop on your bike and let us lead you on a trip through undiscovered nature; along pathways that only the hosts know....

Istria is an especially attractive bike destination with its rich network of macadam pathways and accessory roads that are not exposed to heavy traffic during the seasons of spring and fall, making it especially interesting for recreational cyclists.

We invite you to explore Mediterranean nature with us, including its deciduous forests, olive groves, vineyards, and fields of aromatic plants in karst terrains... We will uncover old Roman rock quarries and cisterns, as well as Romanic churches while we travel towards a group of small, stone village houses where we will stop to relax in the shade provided by surrounding mulberries and enjoy the hospitality offered by our friendly Istrian hosts.

Bicycle Riding

Program

Day 1
Just before dinner, while enjoying your aperitif, our representative will introduce you the upcoming activities program that will take place during the next few days.

Day 2
We will explore the small streets in the Mediterranean city of Rovinj that lead to the top of the city where the Baroque church of St. Euphemia stands. From here, you will see a magnificent view of surrounding islets and the coast itself. We will pass by an astounding number of medieval churches while riding through the city. After a short coffee and cake break on the city’s Riva (waterfront), we will continue along a path running through fields and olive groves with variety of churches, as well as a rock quarry and the tracks of an old, abandoned railway route. The trail is 30 km long, mostly consisting of asphalted roads, but with some macadam sections. It is a fairly easy and pleasant 2-hour ride.

Day 3
Today we set out on a trail of legends and myths just outside of Rovinj. We will lead you through the Palud Ornithological Reserve, with its 217 recorded bird species, and visit the small village Bale with Kaštel Bembo, a Gothic-Renaissance trap. We will pass by Kanfanar and the nearby medieval town of Dvigrad - an abandoned city that was hit by the plague long ago. Riding along the canyon of Lim Bay, we will reach the cave of St. Romuald. During the middle ages, St. Romuald lived the life of a hermit in this cave. And finally, as we ride through Rovinjsko Selo, we will bring our adventure to an end with a lunch! Today’s bike trail is approximately 60 km long. It is of intermediate difficulty and will take around 4 hours to complete.

Day 4
Enjoy the Mediterranean coast in this unusual boat excursion and bicycle ride combination. A pleasant boat ride will take us to the small fishing town of Vrsar, where will ride along narrow streets and take advantage of lookout points. This will be followed by a ride along unique eco-trail that runs along Lim Bay and the Kontija forest reserve. We will take a break in the small agro-tourism town of Kloštar for a traditional Istrian lunch. Upon return to the trail, we will ride down a series of slopes by Lim Bay and will have the opportunity to explore a real pirate’s cave. From the cave, we will return to the boat to enjoy a pleasant ride back to Rovinj. The entire trip (boat + bicycle) lasts approximately 5 hours. The bicycle trail itself offers many experiences and the opportunity to take breaks in order to enjoy in the beauties of the nature.

Day 5
On our last day together, in an attempt to keep the image of the coast and its multitude of islets in our memory for as long as possible, we will head down a protected nature path in the vicinity of Rovinj: the Zlatni Rt park-forest where we will see the Hutterot museum and a Venetian rock quarry with view that extends far out into the open sea. We will then cycle to the gravel shores of Kuvi Bay, followed by Veštar Bay, an old Roman port where the remains of Roman villas and cisterns may be found. Next, a quiet ride through the Palud Ornithological Reserve, followed by a special experience: a tour of the prehistoric fort-hill settlement of Monkodonja. The trail is a total of 30 km long and provides an easy and pleasant bicycle ride that may last anywhere between 2-3 hours, including breaks for refreshments and the enjoyment of natural and cultural monuments along our path. Once our ride comes to an end, we invite you to sample fine Istrian wines and finger food.
