Linđo, a popular traditional dance of the Dubrovnik region, is part of most major festivities in the old city and one of the region’s most unique attractions. Linđo has been performed in the same manner for more than two centuries and is featured every year at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, as well as at other big events in the Dubrovnik coastal region. The dance is also often performed in the Pelješac Peninsula, the Konavle area, the islands of Lastovo and Mljet, and even in parts of the neighbouring Herzegovina.

Linđo is danced to the accompaniment of lijerica, an old pear-shaped, three-stringed instrument played with a bow, that likely evolved from the Byzantine lyra. Lijerica came to the Dubrovnik region from the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the 18th century and gained popularity on the Adriatic coast in the century that followed. The instrument is usually associated with the traditional folk music of southern Dalmatia, Dubrovnik and eastern Herzegovina, but can also be heard in contemporary Croatian music.

Linđo is performed by dancers in pairs who move in a circle around the lijerica player, who dictates the rhythm by stamping his foot, while a dance master shouts out commands in rhyme and decides who will dance with whom. The dance master’s commands are often humorous and have double meaning, giving the dance a very particular local charm.

Linđo tradition

The tradition of Linđo is kept alive by Dubrovnik’s Folklore Ensemble Linđo. The dance was named after a legendary dance leader, Nikola Lale, also known as Linđo, whose great-great-grandson now plays the lijerica in the ensemble. Founed in 1964, the Folklore Ensemble Linđo promotes the region’s traditional dances and songs through performances that enrich the city’s cultural heritage and tours that introduce Dubrovnik’s culture to countries around the world. Since the 1960s, more than 3,000 performers have been part of the ensemble.
