The city walls of Dubrovnik that surround the old city centre were built as a defence system. Today, they are one of the most popular attractions in Dubrovnik, as well as the best-known Dubrovnik monument protected by UNESCO.

Regarded as one of the largest and the best-preserved medieval fortification systems, the walls were built to defend the city from invading enemies. The first fortresses in Dubrovnik date back to the 7th century, but the walls as we know them were built in the 13th century and then systematically extended and fortified by 1660.

The Dubrovnik City Walls are not equally high or equally thick and some sections are 25 metres high. The walls facing the sea are significantly thinner (from 1.5 to 5 metres) than those facing inland (from 4 to 6 metres). The entire fortification system consists of three fortresses, sixteen towers, two corner fortifications, six bastions, the main wall and several other elements.

The Old City of Dubrovnik

The Minčeta Tower dates back to the 14th century and is situated on the northwestern end. It is the highest point of the walls and features a spectacular view of the city and the open sea. Opposite Minčeta stands the Revelin Fortress dating from the 16th century. The view from Revelin spans the old city harbour and the eastern entrance to the city, the Ploče Gate. St John’s Fortress has been protecting the harbour from the southeast since the 14th century, while the Bokar Fortress serves to defend the western Pile Gate. It faces the Lovrjenac Fortress, which stands at 37 metres above sea level.

Dubrovnik City Walls are approximately 2 kilometres long and offer spectacular views of the old city centre, the sea and the island of Lokrum. A walk along the walls can last from 45 minutes to more than 2 hours, depending on the crowds and how often you stop to take photos. Guided tours ending at the Pile Gate are available throughout the year, for individual or group visits.
