Known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Climb Mount Srđ and see why. The whole city in the palm of your hand, a vista that stretches beyond the horizon, a light breeze, the scent of the sea and the warmth of the sun conjure an enchanting experience that will make you fall in love with this fortified city.

A panoramic view of the Pearl of the Adriatic

Unique monuments within the city walls, towers, fortresses, civic and sacral edifices, as well as a diverse tourist offering are a compelling invitation to visit Dubrovnik. The visit becomes a real adventure when there’s a promise of seeing all that from above.

A cable car that takes you to the lookout on Mount Srđ is just the ticket. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful panoramic view over this magnificent city.

What is the story behind the name “Dubrovnik”?

Mount Srđ rises above the city of Dubrovnik and serves as a shield from the strong bura wind. The highest peak is 415 metres high. Not far from the northern slopes of Mount Srđ is the source of River Ombla, one of the most abundant springs in the Dinarides and a source of quality drinking water for the city of Dubrovnik.

Mount Srđ is a favourite day-trip destination for local residents and tourists alike. The mountain used to be overgrown with a luxuriant oak forest called “dubrava” (oak=dub), after which the city was aptly named. If you’re planning your trip, don’t forget to put Mount Srđ on your must-see list. It can be accessed by cable car or by driving through picturesque villages. The view is simply breathtaking, so don’t forget to bring your camera or smartphone to take beautiful photos for unique mementoes of your visit.

For all those who wish to know more: long before St Blaise, the first patron saint of Dubrovnik was St Srđ after whom the mountain was named, as it shielded the city from strong bursts of the bura wind.

The unforgettable experience on Mount Srđ is just a few minutes’ cable-car ride from Stradun. There is also a road that leads to the top of the mountain. It can be reached if you turn towards the village of Bosanka on the way from Dubrovnik to Mlini and vice versa. Driving up this adventurous road, every metre you pass will take you closer to a fairy-tale world. There’s a Mediterranean flair to this place – rocky ground, lavender, forests, horses and donkeys – all the way up until you reach the peak, where you can enjoy the vista or grab a bite and have a drink in a unique ambience.

With the city of Dubrovnik in the palm of your hand, you will see the Island of Lokrum nature reserve, the Elaphiti Islands, and the magnificent vastness of the sea, where the sky and the sea become one in the distance. Isn’t it time to book your plane ticket or get your car ready?
