In the central part of the Istrian peninsula, right below the medieval town of Motovun, lies the Mirna river valley, surrounded by the forest of Motovun. Deep in the ground of this forest, there’s a hidden treasure – the Istrian truffle! Would you like to find it?
Eighty years ago, the truffle was discovered in the forest of Motovun and it has been sparking the interest of local and foreign gourmets ever since.
Tuber magnatum pico or Istrian white truffle stands alongside world-renowned white truffles from Piedmont and evokes pungent umami. The feast begins in September, the truffle is consumed fresh and served finely sliced. If you have a bucket list, the Istrian white truffle should be on it!
The forest of Motovun is the home of three varieties of black truffle, the most renowned of which is Tuber melanosporum. Its growing season lasts from January to spring and its pungent flavour makes it the star of many dishes and menus in taverns all over Istria.
We’re taking you to one of those taverns, but only after you explore the depths of the forest of Motovun and, with the help of trained dogs and experienced guides, try searching for your first truffles!
